The Victoria Walks website has some fantastic stories and info. They send out a monthly newsletter and are looking to

“develop and implement a walking-for-transport local community engagement strategy that will support communities to build more inclusive, safer and walkable neighbourhoods”.

Things That Caught My Eye

  • Walkable neighbourhoods are WORTH more – new study
  • Overseas success – such as the way Curitiba, a provincial city of just over a million in Brazil, has created pedestrian streets, WITHOUT huge public outcries looks terrific. See the video above.
  • European cities’ success – a rundown on how pedestrian friendly Swedish, German, Dutch, Italian, French and Danish cities have become.

AND

WHAT’S WORKING – CASE STUDIES:

  • Acland St Traders – did their research and became strong supporters of pedestrian-friendly changes
  • Love Living Local After looking closely at existing travel behaviour, and the barriers to sustainable travel, this council actively worked to show residents what is on offer in the local neighbourhood with the aim of reducing car use. The idea is spreading!
